Resin flooring products range from a water-based coating (typically 50-60% solids) through to 9mm thick epoxy or polyurethane resin screeds. There are also polymer resin screeds and underlayments which can be applied in excess of 25mm thickness.

Some resin coatings can be easily applied by brush or roller but most resin systems require skilled application techniques. Also, to ensure the maximum life of a product, it is essential the substrate is properly prepared which typically include mechanically abrasion, plus potentially oil decontamination treatment, surface renovation, damp-proofing, concrete repairs and jointing reinstatement.

Budget considerations can determine which type of resin flooring is used; for example, a water-based coating may provide the same benefits as a high-build coating in an area subject to foot traffic but the high-build system will have a longer life expectancy.

However, in most situations it is a case of identifying the right resin product for the particular requirements of the end-user.

The Resin Flooring Association (FeRFA) has produced a classification system to help you compare resin products from different sources.

Type Name Description Duty Typical Thickness
1
Floor seal
Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent or water based.
LD
up to 150 microns
2
Floor coating
Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent-free.
LD / MD
150 microns to 300 microns
3
High build floor coating
Applied in two or more coats. Generally solvent-free.
MD
300 microns to 1000 microns
4
Multi-layer flooring
Aggregate dressed systems based on multiple layers of floor coatings or flow- applied floorings, often described as ‘sandwich’ systems.
MD / HD
>2mm

Flow applied flooring
Often referred to as ‘self-smoothing’ or ‘self-levelling’ flooring and having a smooth surface.
MD / HD

Resin screed flooring
Trowel-finished, heavily filled systems, generally incorporating a surface seal coat to minimise porosity.

>4mm

HD / VHD
